Why did we partner with Dress for Success? Simply said, we love that they empower women to reach their full potential! Their mission aligns with ours...women helping women.
When we initially decided that the benefactor of proceeds from our Italian Leather Purses would be Dress for Success, we knew enough about the organization as a whole to know that their mission was to help women seeking employment. What we did not know was what an incredible impact this organization has made in the lives of more than 1,000,000 (yep! million!) women across the globe since its inception in 1996.
After completing my own clothing and accessory drive, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Executive Director of Dress for Success, Tampa Bay - Katie McGill. Serving as Executive Director for the last 11 years, Katie has loved helping to make a difference in the lives of thousands of women.
In fact, Dress for Success, Tampa Bay just celebrated their 20th anniversary and has some astounding statistics:
~ Served over 25,000 women
~ 87% of clients gain employment after program completion
~80% of Professional Women's Group clients retained jobs for 1+ years
~45% had never owned a suit before Dress for Success
Of course, being well dressed definitely helps build self-esteem, but that's not all this organization offers. In addition to the Suiting Program, they provide a Career Center staffed by volunteers that help create superior resumes and cover letters, provide career counseling, conduct mock interviews and facilitate access to a professional skills training course.
Additionally, there are groups such as Going Places Network and Professional Women's Group that provide ongoing support for the women who have participated in the Suiting Program.
I was so impressed as I toured the facility and learned about all the offerings and how many women they have helped. The thing that touched my heart the most was hearing that in each handbag that the women receive, there is a personal note of encouragement. It made me want to go home and gather up every purse or handbag I have and start writing notes to the women that my bags would be given to.
